Also known as the Swiss Guard, their main role was to guard the interior of the palace, watching over the King’s person day and night and accompanying him on every journey.
The most famous incident in the history of the Swiss Guard was its defence of the Palace of the Tuileries in central Paris on 10 August 1792. Of the 950 Swiss Guards present at the Tuileries, 600 died in battle. After Louis XVI gave the order to cease fire, they were disarmed and massacred.
