Horse Grenadiers, France 1676

The invention of the grenade brought a requirement for specialists in its use. In 1667 elite infantry companies appeared, formed by skilled soldiers selected for their courage, who would be known as grenadiers.

 In 1676 Louis XIV created the Company of Horse Grenadiers of the King’s Military Household. Formed by 86 men, captained by the King himself, the horse grenadiers were armed with rifle, pistol and sword, and marched at the head of the army so also used a military scythe to open a path for the troops. 

As this was an elite company, the uniform distinguished it from other companies, including the wearing of bearskins on the head.
