Scottish Ambulance Service

The Scotch Unit of Ambulances was sent to Spain to collaborate in the attention of the injured men and needed during the SCW. The unit was created by Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson, Foreign Minister of the University of Glasgow, renowned Scotch Hispanist and professor of Language and Spanish Literature in the above mentioned university. To little of the war exploded it proposed to organize a unit independent from the currents of help to the decrees in contest. That was neutral, but there was scorned rapidly given the difficulty of moving him from a zone to other one. His arrival practically coincided with the beginning of the operations I half-close Madrid, by what the ambulances were distributed in the surroundings of the capital and there they remained during most of the contest. Supervised by the unit there was Fernanda Jacobsen, a Scot who would be the engine of the same one and who would support it in functioning during almost the whole contest. The first convoy with 6 ambulances, 12 trucks and a bus came to Madrid On September 17. Along the war two more convoys were sent to re-put the falls of material that were taking place. The unit was not exempt from certain controversy. During the first different months of his members they were returned to Scotland. Fernanda Jacobsen was accused of helping to escape Franco supporters from red terror using the ambulances. This unit realized a great humanitarian labor.
