1914 Montenegro Guard soldier

Montenegro was a small country in the Balkans, politically it was a monarchy with strong ties to neighbouring Serbia and caught between two superpowers, the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the north and the Ottoman Empire to the south. After the outbreak of the Great War, Montenegro went to war with Serbia and the Allies. The Austro-Hungarian Empire invaded it shortly afterwards and quickly took over Cétienne, sending King Nikola into exile in France. In 1918, the Serbian army entered Montenegro and the French, who were in favour of implementing the union between Serbia and Montenegro, refused to allow King Nikola to leave France, formally ending the dynasty Petrović. In the same year, Montenegro ceased to exist after being incorporated into the newly created Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the first Yugoslavia.
