Political Phoenician refugees originating in Tyrus. They founded Carthage in 850 BCE. on the coast of North Africa in Libya. The first known Carthaginian leader was Malcus (550-500 BCE.). The most important leaders were Amilcar (480 BCE.), Amilcar Barca (249 BCE.), Hannibal Barca, who destroyed and seized Sagunto in 217 BCE., and Asdrubal who on trying to unite with Hannibal in Italy, was put to flight and killed by the Romans in Metaurus (214 BCE.).
Hannibal died in 183 BCE., and finally during the Punic Wars (149-146 BCE.) Carthage was besieged, taken, and destroyed, ceasing to exist as a nation.
