Richard Nixon (1913-1994)

As a birthright Quaker, he could have claimed exemption from the draft, but chose not to apply; he might also have been deferred because he worked in government service. His application to enlist was successful, and he was inducted into the Navy in August 1942.

Was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974 when he became the only U.S. president to resign the office.

Nixon ended American involvement in the war in Vietnam in 1973 and brought the American prisoners home.
