Jean, Duke of Berry (1340-1416)
John I of Berry was the son of John II of France, after the Battle of Poitiers in 1356 he was taken hostage by the English until 1367. After the death of his brother Charles V le Sage, (Charles V of France the Wise), he was the tutor of the young Charles VI, standing out in his administrative duties for his avarice, a fact that provoked serious disputes among the French nobility, aggravated when Charles VI was declared insane. In 1381 John I of Berry was appointed lieutenant general of the king in Languedoc where he severely punished the population, who rebelled against the royal power. The troops, led by the Duke of Berry, faced the uprising at the Battle of Uchaud near Lunel by subduing the region. Finally, when Charles VI was able to rule, I removed him and ordered his collaborators to be burned.
Throughout his life, Berry had spent lavishly to promote the arts, and at his death there was not enough money to pay for his funeral. He had invested fortunes on the treasures that remain as his monument—paintings, tapestries, jewelry, and illuminated manuscripts (including the world-famous Très riches heures du duc de Berry).
