John de Vere, Earl of Oxford
7th Earl of Oxford, fought side by side with the Black Prince at Crecy (1346) & Poitiers (1356).
He and the prince had already started to cross the main body of troops over the river behind the battlefield, to attempt a withdrawal from the huge mass of French at their front when the French attacked. They returned in time to bolster the rearguard forces at Poitiers.
