Eustace de Ribeaumont, French King Standard-Bearer at Poitiers Battle
During the siege of Calais of 1348, out of his walls, the king Edward III fought against Eustace de Ribeaumont in singular combat, but the fight was interrupted by the advance of the belligerent armies, being this made prisoner. Such it was the value that it demonstrated, that it was invited to sup on this night by the king and his gentlemen. During the dinner, the King Edward III said to him that more courageous gentleman had never seen and granted the freedom to him. Some years later, during the Battle of Poitiers (1356), Eustace de Ribeaumont, would be the standard-bearer of the king of France Jean II.
